  • Mindfulness Moment of the Day

This morning my daughter, who is visiting, said that her mindfulness e-mail of the day was to “look closely at a flower.”

I went with her as we looked first at the fresh blooms of the butterfly bush. http://www.garden.org/plantguide/?q=show&id=2091

The butterfly bush is one of my favorites because it is easy to grow, cheap to purchase, and comes in a variety of colors.

    Delicate in white

    Succulent to bee and bird

    Queen of the garden

Cleome was another bloom of interest.  These volunteers captured our attention. http://www.gardenguides.com/77-cleome-spider-flower-garden-basics-flower-annual-cleome-hasslerana.html

Also known as the spider flower they come in a variety of colors also.  Some are all white, all lavender or two-tones like those in the photo.

Queen Anne’s Lace is a plant my wife has been wanting for years.  They grow wild in meadows and ditches, at least in TN and KY.

Also called wild carrot it is considered an invasive weed in many states and grows in every state in the union except Alaska.

This is the Crape Myrtle (yes that is considered the correct spelling!). These lovely bushes did not grow where I grew up and I have come to love them.

They are a southern plant and come in a variety of types and colors.  We have four in our yard. http://www.usna.usda.gov/Gardens/faqs/crapemyrtlefaq2.html

If you didn’t get a chance to be mindful as you looked at a flower today I hope you will pick your favorite from these four photos and appreciate the beauty it can present to you.

On my next walk I will do just this!

I have a hard time picking a fav from your beautiful photos! But, I really love the Queen Anne’s Lace!
HUGS!!! Happy safe fun 4th to you and your family!!!

  • Crape Myrtle is my favorite too–Living in Texas I have several in my yard. Thanks for reminding us to slow down and enjoy.

  • I love the funky design of the Cleome. My mother has a few in various colors, they look almost alien. And Queen Anne’s Lace. Those grow kind of wild here, too. I remember there used to be a vacant lot not far from my house and my brother and I would go there periodically and pick them for my mother and grandmother; I don’t think either of them ever tried growing them. I see them sometimes randomly on the side of the highways, too. I think it’s a very aptly named flower, very lacy and delicate looking.

Right now it is tiger lily season; they seem to be popping up everywhere. So if I am to look closely at a flower, it might end up being that one. :)

  • We tend to think of Queen Ann’s Lace as a weed but it is a beautiful flower.

  • I took 2 pictures of flowers today, but haven’t put them on computer yet.  Queen Anne’s lace is considered a weed here.

It’s a pretty weed though, with no stickers.

  • Great close ups! I am looking at my hostas that are just starting to bloom… some purple and some white.

  • Each one of them is so beautiful Bill. Queen Ann’s lace is particularly fetching.

  • Those are all very beautiful.

  • are flowering shrubs are looking a little sad lately. Time to clean it up around the yard.
