The Black Snake - a poem by Mary Oliver
Poem by me --
Captured
No need to slither through hip-high grass along ditches of gravel paths to north meadow,
nor need for vigilance of roaring blades cropping roadsides before winter.
Finally attuned to touch of foreign skins and gliding through rocks transported from river-beds
and sunbathing in fluorescent rays safe, fortunate, fed and enslaved to live a life on stage.

Heavy holiday newspaper four pounds of materialism, stacks of temptation disguised as Black Friday.
Razors, rollers horns and honey; specialty foods aplenty.
Accumulate happiness.
Stand in artificial light
swipe plastic
search among strangers on a mutual quest to fill attics with
with next year’s Thanksgiving blessings. |
