The Gathering
Perhaps they expect a pool
offerings of rare coffee
from Ethiopia
Instead of
a view of hydrangea
plus pale ale in mugs
Conversation entails
irrelevant niceties
of trivial events
Smiles exchanged
chairs rearranged
subtlety reigns
Another chance
to touch humanity
willfully aborted

This is simple and elegant! It does convey the awkwardness of meetings with strangers and the play of expectations on the outcome.

So true. It’s a bit sad that we place so much effort in “not touching” each other.

Your poem is beautiful…it captured deep feelings, awkward encounters, and sad endings.
I think it’s sad when people do “the polite thing” and then leave without making a new friend, or laughing their arse off, or sighing deeply from having a genuinely great time with others or from helping others!
Your hydrangeas and pale ale sound lovely!
I’d show up if it was water and a slice of bread.
For me, gatherings are all about the people! Being with the people! Getting to know the people! Getting to HUG the people!

Sad how we would rather walk away than be a part of a human meeting of those we do not know.
Many Pot lucks consists of just ordinary store bought goods
But true Pot lucks consists of wholesome goodness from the heart.
Instead of arranging into solid cliques a true get together is one giant conglomerate cell. Mixing and meeting and truly sharing.
There might be a centerpiece of flowers lovingly arranged by someone in the crowd, there is the volunteer that cheerfully arranges the furniture and sees to the needs of the meeting. But most of all there is a sense of comradery something that is wonderous to behold.
As they say in my lingo, everyOne is cool that is sufficient for me.
