Patches along the Road

Auburn hair,
like the colors flashing before him
on the drive along Hwy 261.

He thinks of her when he travels.

Roan Mountain fades
as he steadies his wheel
along the white hyphens.

He remembers her when he travels.

Their daughter has auburn hair
like the dark patterns sunlight
accents among the autumn display.

He dwells on her and their daughter.

Rear view mirror reflects his creased forehead
like his mother grew from all her worries.
Travel grants him time —

time to think of them.

“Mistakes were made.”
A cop-out rests in that thought:
he made mistakes.

He broods when he travels.

I.

Hallway walls painted in semi-gloss
blend with murk of emotion,
the ceiling coated with his mistakes.
His clinical genius fails
to gather her forgiveness.

She flaunts neglect,
he allows no one to enter
their world.

III.

She erects invisible mountains
for him to climb, trailheads uncharted,
he trudges through fallen ruins
in search of the secret stream:
their lost love.

...went to my first band competition this weekend in the cold but I got to see my granddaughter perform as the band's drum major and my grandson play in the high school band even though he is only in the eight grade. Actually there are two drum majors and she is the one who directs from the stand. Was a good day as she won top rating for drum major for the band's class. Later on that day the band got Grand Champion for the entire competition. The whole scene is new to me as I have not had a child or close member of the family be in a band.
